Who's At the Other End of the Leash?

I'm Geoffrey Hancock, owner of Caliper Ridge Professional Dog Training and a graduate of the Canine Academy run by Sue McMullen.  I am also an actuary (FSA, FCIA, CERA).  My lifelong passion for dogs began in 1977 when my family rescued a young Lab/Bloodhound cross named Mindy. We were inseparable, and she taught me as much as I taught her — about life, learning, quiet bonding, and embracing the moment. Since then, I’ve worked with and cared for many dozens of dogs of all sizes and ages, building the foundation for my career in professional dog training.   I have my CPDT-KA certification and a credential in canine behaviour.

In early 2021, I rescued Jasper, a Catahoula Leopard Dog with fear-based aggression and reactivity caused by past trauma and lack of socialization. However, with patience, consistency, mutual respect, understanding, extensive obedience training and behaviour modification, Jasper now is quite social and has many dog and human friends. Working with Jasper has shown that all dogs, no matter their past, are worth helping and capable of greatness.

While there are proven training methods, I do not force "cookie cutter" approaches on my clients and their dogs.  If something isn't working, we adapt and make changes.  Every person, every dog and every situation is different.  As owner and lead trainer at Caliper Ridge, I am personally committed to helping you and your dog in a way that suits you, your dog and your life.  I also make training fun.

I know and live first-hand, everyday, the highs and lows that occur in training, especially with dogs that have behavioural problems.  When I adopted my Catahoula, Jasper, I struggled with his significant challenges.  I felt isolated by the training he needed and sad that his progress was so slow.  However, once I fully accepted Jasper for the dog he is, not the dog I envisioned, everything changed.  Training was still hard and required much patience, but it turned into a labour of love and we celebrated every victory no matter how small.  I learned never to compare him to other dogs, past, present or future.  I always "work with the dog in front of me" and this is a key message behind my advice.

I know people are busy and work, so I come to you for private training and I am available most evenings and weekends. 

I studied under Sue McMullen at the Canine Academy.  Sue is the best in the industry and as my mentor, I have ongoing access to her for consultation on very complex cases.  

Our group programs are held outdoors on the one-of-a-kind private River Song property in Nottawa.  The classes are conducted in a safe, stimulating and enriching real-world environment.  After class, we enjoy a social "pack walk" around the pond.  It is a truly special and unique experience that you will not find anywhere else.

I am also humble enough to know that I don't have all the answers for every client and dog.  In those cases, I will help you find the support you need.
