My lifelong passion for and admiration of dogs started in 1977 when I was 11 years old. My family rescued a young Lab/Bloodhound cross named Mindy. We were inseparable. She taught me as much as I taught her - about life, learning, quiet bonding and embracing the moment. Since then, I've worked with and enjoyed time with dozens of dogs of all sizes and ages. In early 2021, I rescued Jasper, a Catahoula Leopard dog with fear-aggression reactivity due to past trauma and lack of socialization. However, with patience, consistency, mutual respect and understanding, Jasper now is quite social and has several dog and human friends. Working with Jasper has shown that all dogs, no matter their past, are worth helping and capable of greatness.
It is my goal to help you and your dog reach your potential. I understand that every dog is unique, which is why I offer customized training programs that are tailored to meet the specific needs of each dog, the owner and the situation. I will provide realistic expectations and effective training, described in plain language with clear explanations for the techniques suggested. I am also available outside of training sessions for follow-up by phone or email.
I follow LIMA (Least Intrusive, Minimally Aversive) principles, focusing on positive reinforcement to build reliable behaviours and strengthen the human-dog bond. My methods are rooted in current behavioural science and adapted to each dog and owner—if something isn’t working, we adjust. I studied under Sue McMullen at the Canine Academy and continue to consult with her on complex cases. As a member of the Canadian Association of Professional Dog Trainers (CAPDT), I’m committed to ongoing education through accredited courses and seminars.
I am a certified graduate of Sue McMullen's Professional Dog Trainer Program. The program is comprehensive and holistic and covers a broad array of theory and case studies in addition to hands-on training and testing. As a graduate, I have ongoing access to Sue for consultation on highly complex cases.
I have regular shifts at the regional humane society based in Collingwood. I am trained and approved to work with "red level" dogs - those with complex and/or significant behavioural challenges such as aggression, reactivity, resource guarding, fear and more. I adopted my dog, Jasper, from the GTHS in 2021.
